Medicare Advantage Plans

There are a variety of ways to receive your Medicare benefits. Many Medicare beneficiaries join managed care plans, known as Medicare Advantage (formerly Medicare + Choice) plans. Under this arrangement, private companies contract with the Medicare program to offer care to Medicare beneficiaries. These plans are prepaid, coordinated care plans, most of which are health maintenance organizations (HMOs).

Managed care plans focus on the relationship between the beneficiary and the primary care physician. In this arrangement, the doctor authorizes, arranges for, and coordinates all services for the beneficiary. Since the care and coverage are comprehensive, there is usually no need for a supplemental insurance policy. Managed care plans also reduce paperwork.

The Medicare Advantage plans can provide you with more choices, and in some case, extra benefits. Benefits may include preventive care such as mammography screening and flu vaccinations, as well as prescription drugs, dental care, hearing aids, and eyeglasses. Bear in mind that you might have to pay a monthly premium for the extra benefits. Plan availability is dependent upon where you live. The type of plan you choose determines how you get your health care in the Medicare program.
